You know the feeling. You pull on one hoodie and it feels like a blanket made of cotton candy. You pull on another and it feels like cardboard. The difference? How the cotton was spun.
What Is Ring-Spun Cotton?
Ring-spun cotton is made by continuously twisting and thinning cotton strands to create a very fine, strong, soft rope of fibres. The process aligns the fibres in a consistent direction, producing yarn that's smoother, stronger, and softer than conventional cotton.
Regular cotton — sometimes called open-end or carded cotton — is made by bundling raw cotton fibres together without the same degree of twisting and alignment. It's faster and cheaper to produce, but the resulting yarn is rougher, weaker, and more prone to pilling.
How It Feels
The difference is obvious the first time you touch both fabrics side by side. Ring-spun cotton feels noticeably smoother and softer against your skin. It has a finer weave because the yarn is thinner, which creates a denser, more compact fabric that drapes better and feels more luxurious.
Regular cotton feels bulkier and coarser. It's adequate for a cheap t-shirt, but it doesn't have the same hand-feel that makes you want to live in a garment.
How It Lasts
Because ring-spun fibres are twisted more tightly, the fabric holds up better over time. It resists pilling, maintains its shape through repeated washes, and keeps its colour longer. Regular cotton tends to break down faster — the loosely bundled fibres separate, pill, and degrade.
This is why ring-spun cotton costs more. The process takes longer, uses more steps, and produces a superior product. But that cost is recovered in longevity. A ring-spun hoodie that lasts three to five years is cheaper per-wear than a regular cotton hoodie that loses its shape after six months.
Our 80/20 Blend
Every Karigar Creations hoodie uses an 80/20 blend — eighty percent ring-spun cotton and twenty percent polyester. The ring-spun cotton provides the softness, breathability, and natural feel. The polyester adds structure, moisture-wicking capability, and resistance to shrinking.
This blend gives you the best of both worlds: a hoodie that feels like pure cotton but holds its shape and colour like a performance fabric. At 8.4 ounces, it's midweight — heavy enough for warmth, light enough for layering.
Why We Chose It
Because the philosophy extends to the fabric. If we're going to put the word PERSEVERANCE on a hoodie, the hoodie itself needs to persevere. If we're going to charge a fair price, the material needs to justify it. Ring-spun cotton isn't the cheapest option. But it's the right one.
Quality fabric is the foundation that everything else — the art, the meaning, the longevity — is built on. We started there because a karigar always starts with the best material they can find.
