7 Tips to Make Your Hoodie Last Longer

Small things make big differences. Here are seven practical tips to extend the life of your favourite hoodie — and keep it looking its best for years.

1. Wash Less Often

You don't need to wash your hoodie after every wear. Unless it's visibly dirty or has absorbed sweat, airing it out between wears extends its life significantly. Hang it in a ventilated area overnight. Most odours dissipate naturally. Fewer washes means less friction, less heat exposure, and less wear on the fabric and print.

2. Use a Mesh Laundry Bag

For extra protection, place your hoodie in a mesh laundry bag before putting it in the machine. This reduces friction against other garments and the drum, protecting both the fabric and the print. It's a one-dollar investment that adds years of life.

3. Skip the Fabric Softener

Fabric softener coats fibres with a thin layer of chemicals that reduce absorbency and can degrade print adhesion over time. Your ring-spun cotton hoodie gets softer naturally with every wash — it doesn't need chemical help. If you want extra softness, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead.

4. Remove Promptly from the Dryer

Don't let your hoodie sit in the dryer after the cycle ends. The residual heat and crumpling can set wrinkles and stress the fabric. Remove it promptly and fold or hang immediately.

5. Treat Stains Immediately

The sooner you address a stain, the easier it is to remove. Blot — don't rub — the stain with cold water and a mild soap. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres. Let the soap sit for ten minutes before washing.

6. Rotate Your Hoodies

If you own multiple hoodies, rotate them. Wearing the same one every day concentrates all the wear, washing, and stretching on a single garment. Rotating between two or three distributes the load and extends the life of all of them.

7. Store Seasonally

If you're storing hoodies during warmer months, wash them first to remove any body oils that could set or attract insects. Fold them and store in a cool, dry place. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets help deter moths without chemical damage.

The Payoff

Seven simple habits. Each one takes seconds. Together, they can double or triple the lifespan of your hoodie. That's not just good garment care — it's sustainability in practice.
