Not all hoodies age the same way. Some crack, fade, and pill within months. Others soften, settle, and get better with every wash. The difference is in the fabric, the construction, and the care.
How Ring-Spun Cotton Ages
Ring-spun cotton has a unique ageing trajectory. Because the fibres are twisted tightly and aligned in a consistent direction, the fabric becomes softer over time without losing structure. Each wash relaxes the fibres slightly, creating a hand-feel that improves with wear.
Compare this to open-end cotton, which starts rough and gets rougher. The loosely bundled fibres separate and pill, creating a surface that feels cheap and looks worn in the worst way.
The First Wash
Expect minimal shrinkage on the first wash — approximately three to five percent, depending on the wash temperature. This is normal for cotton blends and is accounted for in our sizing. After the first wash, the hoodie settles into its true fit and won't shrink further if you continue washing cold.
Colour Over Time
Our dyes are designed for longevity. With proper care — cold wash, inside out, mild detergent — the colours maintain their depth through dozens of wash cycles. Some slight mellowing over years of wear is natural and actually enhances the character of the garment. A maroon hoodie that softens slightly over two years looks lived-in and loved, not faded.
Print Durability
The brushstroke art is designed to maintain its detail and vibrancy through the life of the hoodie. With proper care, the print should show minimal degradation over years of regular wear. Some natural softening of the print is expected — it becomes less "crisp" and more integrated with the fabric, which actually enhances the handmade aesthetic.
Signs of a Well-Loved Hoodie
A hoodie that's been worn well tells its own story. The fabric softens. The cuffs relax. The print settles into the weave. The colour mellows. These aren't signs of deterioration — they're signs of a garment that's been lived in. A well-worn Karigar Creations hoodie looks better at year three than it did at year one.
When to Retire
A quality hoodie doesn't have a fixed lifespan. When the cuffs lose their elasticity, when the print has cracked beyond character, when the fabric has thinned to the point of transparency — that's when it's time. But with proper care, that day should be years away.
